Coaches Notes: I have given this advice to people in classes before but felt it was worthy of a coaches note anyway. Breathing is just as important in a deadlift as a squat and is often forgotten. Most people get set for the deadlift and then breath in before beginning the lift. Sometimes this can be hard because of the cramped position of the stomach and chest. I have found that it is actually easier to take in a deep breath while standing and then find your position. This does two things. First off it allows you to fully inhale and adequately push the diaphragm down. This should make you feel tighter and stronger. Second it prevents you from over thinking things and mentally beating yourself while contemplating the lift. The downside obviously is that you can't dilly dally or you might pass out before you get to lift.
