What grip to use for the deadlift? I get this question a lot. When to switch grip, should I just hook grip, etc. My advice is always to stick with a standard double-overhand grip until grip becomes an issue. We want to train grip strength as much as we can because it will translate to stronger lifts. Try sticking with a tougher grip for longer. Once you feel like you are being limited, try using a switch grip or hook grip. My biggest issue with a switch grip is how it usually leads to people rotating one shoulder more forward than the other. If you are going to switch grip, make sure and square the shoulders up tight before lifting.
